Researchers Discover This Common Ingredient Can Reduce Early Death

A recent study of healthy adults discovered that those who had low levels of bicarbonate had a higher risk of death than those with normal levels. In fact, low bicarbonate levels were found to increase premature death by as much as 24 percent.

The recent discovery came from a 10-year study of over 2,000 participants between the ages of 70-79. The Health, Aging and Body Composition Study tracked data on the participants through February of 2014. Dr. Kalani Raphael, the study's author and an associate professor and nephrology and hypertension specialist at the University of Utah, noted that “Critically ill patients with severe acid-base abnormalities have a very low likelihood of surviving their illness."
