Food additives are everywhere. Today, there is an urgent need to read labels in order to know just what the manufacturers are putting into our food. Well, here's another one to watch out for. It's called carrageenan and it causes belly pain and inflammation.
What is carrageenan?
Carrageenan is extracted from red edible seaweeds. Sounds OK so far. They are widely used in the food industry as a thickener. It is often found in frozen foods, ice cream, soups and broths. Even though it is natural, it is being linked to stomach inflammation and irritation, and even cancer.
According to a study published in the Journal of Diabetes Research, carrageenan fed to animals for six days caused them to develop high blood sugar levels. Even worse, Dr. Joanne Tobacman, who has conducted many studies on the effects of carrageenan, added that inflammation is a well-established factor in most chronic disease, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, pain disorders and others.
The bottom line is that everyone has to read labels now because even what we might think is natural and good for us might have just the opposite effect.
