Here are 5 symptoms to watch for during your menstrual cycle:
- Increase in cholesterol level - this is one to watch for, especially if you already have a high cholesterol count. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reported that cholesterol levels are lowest just before the menstrual cycle but can rise during the cycle. Lower cholesterol is important to maintain for good heart health.
- Upper respiratory problems - women who have asthma, COPD, and other respiratory problems should be aware that these symptoms may increase during the menstrual cycle, according to a Norway study. These symptoms may be worse for women who are overweight or who smoke.
- Gum disease - an article in Women's Health revealed that gum disease may develop during the menstrual cycle due to an increase in estrogen levels. This can leave gums sensitive and swollen as well.
- Injuries - this may seem like an odd symptom, but according to Australian researchers, women’s knees often move differently during their menstrual cycles. This can cause unexpected knee movement and increase risk for falling and injury.
- Mood swings - this one is commonly known but good to keep in mind if your menstrual cycle comes at a time when you are making important decisions. The Journal of Consumer Psychology also shows that women are more likely to spend more on clothes during their menstrual cycle, a time when hormones are at their highest level. Be cautious about relationships during this time, too, as the menstrual cycle can cause moodiness and acting out in ways that are not the norm.
