What causes dandruff?
Dandruff is caused by anything from a dry scalp to eczema, psoriasis, or a yeast-like fungus. While dry-skin dandruff generally shows up occasionally and in small flakes, eczema, psoriasis and fungus occur more often and produce larger flakes not only on the scalp but in the eyebrows, ears and even on the nose.
Treatment
The good news is that dandruff is very treatable. Common dandruff can often be cured by:
- Shampooing and brushing hair often to get rid of dead cells
- Eating more foods that contain zinc and B vitamins, both of which are important to grow healthy hair
- Turn the heat down and add more moisture to the air during winter months
Sometimes shampoos can cause irritation, so try switching shampoos. There are other over-the-counter products that can help. Be sure to read the label as you want to make sure you get the treatment that matches your type of dandruff.
- Shampoos that contain zinc pyrithione is good for dandruff caused by fungus and bacteria
- Hair products that contain coal tar and selenium sulfide slows down the growth and flaking off of skin cells on the scalp
- Shampoos with salicylic acid will loosen the flakes and make them easier to wash away
