Accidents are among the top ten ways in which people in America can die. But health problems represent a much higher mortality risk, according to the Mayo Clinic. Here are the top 10 health-related causes of death in America.

Heart Disease

Strokes and heart attacks caused by heart disease kills more people in the U.S. than any type of cancer, according to the American Heart Association. It is the leading cause of death in America.


Lung cancer is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S., and cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, according to National Cancer Institute. Lung cancer kills more than 159,000 people a year. The second most dangerous cancer is breast cancer and colorectal cancer which affects more women than men.


Stroke is the third leading cause of death among women, and fourth leading cause of death among men. It is very much aligned with heart disease which is the number one cause of death. Strokes are considered a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the blood vessels leading to the brain, cutting off vital blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Stroke happens when a blood vessel feeding the brain gets clogged or bursts.

Respiratory Diseases

Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, also known as COPD, are types of respiratory diseases that make breathing difficult due to damaged lungs. They include bronchitis and emphysema. According to The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the greatest risk factor for COPD is smoking.


The leading cause of fatal injuries among both men and women is auto accidents, followed by poisoning and falls.

Other leading causes of death in the U.S. includes diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease and blood poisoning.
