They treat patients every day and know what causes various types of heart disease, like poor diets. This is why heart doctors will never eat these 13 foods -- they know what these foods can do to your heart.

13 foods heart doctors won't eat

#1 Hot dogs - hot dogs and other processed meat, like bacon, sausages, ham and luncheon meats are full of saturated fats, salt and chemicals -- all of which can be harmful to your heart.

#2 Red meat - cardiologists recommend eating red meat no more than once a month. Why? Because it is loaded with saturated fats, cholesterol, and salt.

#3 Potato chips - are full of trans-fats, sodium, and carbs. The same goes for popcorn topped with butter and salt. Doctors recommend no more than 1,500 milligrams a day of sodium.

#4 Pizza - who doesn't enjoy a weekend pizza? One cardiologist refers to pizza as one "giant carbohydrate topped with salt and processed cheese." It's best to make your own so you can control what's on top of your pizza.

#5 Diet soda - diet soda can promote weight gain and being overweight is bad for your heart. According to Sindhu Koshy, MD, a cardiologist at Ascension St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital in Michigan, states "The aspartame in diet soda is actually worse for you than sugar or high fructose corn syrup and can make you crave sweet things."

#6 Table salt - excess salt causes high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, and heart disease. Try replacing salt with other spices like cumin, curry, garlic, rosemary, and cinnamon.

#7 White bread - white starches found in white bread, pastas and rice all turn to sugar. Excess sugar is bad for your heart. Try whole grains instead.

#8 Cereal - cereal-in-the-box is often loaded with sugar and calories. Compare box labels and choose cereals with less sugar. One study showed that people who consumed 17 to 21 percent of calories from added sugar had a 38 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than people who consumed 8 percent.

#9 Fried chicken - chicken and other foods that are fried are bad for your health, adding fat, calories and oxidants that damage cells.

#10 Energy drinks - they may be advertised as healthy, but the truth is they contain guarana and taurine, as well as caffeine, which can trigger increased heart rate and arrhythmia.

#11 Frosting - the kind of frosting you buy in a jar at the store has 20 grams of sugar per 2 tablespoons. What is the daily recommended for sugar -- 36 grams.

#12 Cheez Whiz - there is a reason why Cheez Whiz can be eaten 5 months after the expiration date. It is processed with chemicals. It's also full of calories and saturated fats. Aw gee whiz!

#13 - Ramen noodles - remember all those ramen noodles you ate in college? Little did you know a typical packet has 875 mg of sodium -- enough to send your heart racing.
