Summer is finally here, time for swimming and getting on that bathing suit. But if you are one of those people who have been caught off guard, you're probably panicking, trying to figure out how to get a nice flat tummy before you hit the beach. You can do it by following a few healthy habits -- without exercising!

10 ways to flatten your tummy

  1. Cut back on salt: Yes, salt makes you retain more water, so go easy on salt.
  2. Cut back on sugar: Sugary goods can add not only calories but inches around the waistline. Go easy on the sugar.
  3. Watch gas-producing vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are very good for you, but they produce gas that can cause bloating around the waistline. By all means eat them, but maybe not before you put on that bathing suit.
  4. Nix the processed food: It's easy to consume more junk food in the summer, but it's the worst thing for your waistline. Processed foods are full of salt that causes bloating and extra calories that add pounds.
  5. Eliminate soda: Whether it's regular or diet, all sodas are going to add bloating and calories from the carbonation and sweeteners. Drink more water instead.
  6. Eat more fruit: Fruits like apples, oranges, berries and cherries help to reduce belly inflammation and make great smoothies.
  7. Reduce stress: Many people don't realize that stress increases your levels of cortisol which triggers the storage of fat around your waist. Find ways to reduce stress, like walking, yoga, or meditation.
  8. Eat more fiber: The more fiber you eat, the less fat you will accumulate around your belly. Fiber can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  9. Stop smoking: Contrary to popular belief, cigarette smoking causes you to gain weight, not lose it. People who smoke have a tendency to gain more weight around the belly.
  10. Get a little spicy: Spices such as fennel, peppermint, and ginger increases digestive enzymes, making food move through your system quicker. This means a flatter tummy.
