How Safe is Ground Beef From the Grocery Store? Find Out Before You Eat That Next Burger!
Americans are the biggest meat eaters in the world, especially when it comes to beef. We love our steaks and burgers. But how safe is that beef you buy at the grocery store?

How safe is beef?

Consumer Reports recently tested ground beef to see just how safe it it, and the results were alarming. About 20 percent of the 458 pounds of beef they examined contained a strain of bacteria that causes nearly a million cases of food poisoning annually. All of the beef also had levels of bacteria, including fecal contamination, that can make humans very ill with blood or urinary tract infections.

Here's the problem

Most bacteria is killed during the cooking process. However, about 28 percent of Americans like to eat their beef rare. Under cooking beef, especially ground beef, can lead to contamination. Even cooking at high temperatures, there is no guarantee that all the bacteria will be killed.

What you can do to protect yourself

Health experts warn that the risk of eating ground beef is higher than most consumers realize. Consumer Reports recommends buying beef that is from animals which have not been fed antibiotics. Look for grass-fed organic beef at the grocery store. It may cost a little more but it is worth it to ensure you are eating beef that is not contaminated.
