Burger King Does the Right Thing for Kids -- No More Soft Drinks in Kids' Meals!

Burger King Does the Right Thing for Kids -- No More Soft Drinks in Kids' Meals!
There are so many reasons why kids, and adults for that matter, should not drink sugary sodas. But it's hard to keep kids away from it when soft drinks are served at most all the fast food restaurants. Well, one fast food restaurant is joining others who have recently stepped forward to do the right thing. Burger King is taking a stand by no longer putting soft drinks in kids' meals.

Doing the right thing

Instead of soft drinks, fast food giant Burger King has substituted healthier choices in their kids' meals, such as fat-free milk, 100% apple juice and low-fat chocolate milk. The President of Burger King North America, Alex Macedo, said the change was made “as part of our ongoing effort to offer our guests options that match lifestyle needs.”

Pressure from children's advocacy groups

The recent move by Burger King follows similar moves by McDonald's, who dropped soft drinks from Happy Meals in 2013, and Wendy's, who removed soft drinks from their kids' menu earlier this year. Pressure from children's advocacy groups such as MomsRising.org, the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and others have finally resulted in changes that will benefit the health of our children.

Soft drinks are bad for kids for many reasons, including tooth decay, depleting bones of calcium, and child obesity and diabetes. Kudos to Burger King and all the other fast food restaurants for doing the right thing for our children!
