Best Brain Foods for Children -- Check Out These Top 5

Many people don't realize that the brain is an organ, and like other organs in the body, absorbs nutrients. And like other organs, the way you feed the brain will determine how it functions. So, if you want to give your children the best possible results from school, feed their brains with the right foods.

Garbage in, garbage out

This is a popular expression when it comes to computers. What you enter determines the results. The same goes for the brain. What you feed it will determine your child's ability to concentrate, absorb and process information. So, what is the best way to do this? Here are 5 of the best brain foods to feed your children.

  • Eggs - most children like eggs for breakfast, and they are loaded with protein. Don't forget hard-boiled eggs for lunch, or a good old fashioned egg salad sandwich.
  • Salmon - try substituting salmon for tuna. Salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids that are good for brain power.
  • Peanut butter - yes, this favorite is also a favorite for brain function. Peanut butter has lots of vitamin E that's good for the brain and nervous system.
  • Whole grains - contain vitamin B for the nervous system. It's an easy switch to change to whole grains in bread, pasta, and cereals and a good move to help boost brain power.
  • Oats - are good sources of vitamin E, B vitamins, potassium, and zinc all of which are great brain food. Plus, you can add your children's favorite fruit to jazz it up. Oats are also a good source of fiber that will leave their tummies feeling full until lunch.

According to Detroit nutritionist and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, Bethany Thayer, "Give the body junk food, and the brain is certainly going to suffer."
