Heavy Metal OK For Music But NOT In Your Lipstick -- Find Out Which Lipsticks Are Dangerous

It's a sad, modern truth that even lipsticks are now on alert for potential danger to your health. Why? Because some lipsticks may contain lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and other heavy metals, according to a recent study from the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Public Health. Lipstick is either absorbed or ingested into the body, making lipsticks containing hazardous chemicals a real health concern.

What's in your lipstick?

According to the study, many lipsticks are now produced using dangerous chemicals and preservatives such as Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Retinyl Palmitate, and Tocopheryl Acetate. Don't worry about how to pronounce them; if you can't pronounce them, they are most likely not good. All these chemicals produce reactions that range from skin irritation to cancer, and reproductive disorders and failure, as well as endocrine system failure. Even D&C Red 36 or D&C Red 22 colorant (yes, this one you can pronounce) may cause damage to the nervous system.

The danger is real

Don't let the lipstick ads fool you. The University of California Berkeley report was quite clear that the levels of dangerous chemicals in many of the tested lipsticks were in a high enough concentration to cause damage to your health. As S. Katharine Hammond, professor of environmental health sciences at the university who was the principal investigator stated, “Just finding these metals isn’t the issue; it’s the levels that matter.” “Some of the toxic metals are occurring at levels that could possibly have an effect in the long term.”

Lipsticks that were identified as containing the highest and most dangerous levels of metal

  • Maybelline Color Sensational #125 Pink Petal
  • L'Oreal Colour Riche #410 Volcanic and #165 Tickled Pink
  • NARS Semi-Matte #1005 Red Lizard and #1009 Funny Face
  • Color Girl Queen Collection Vibrant Hues Color #580 Ruby Remix

NOTE: Maybelline Color Sensational #125 Pink Petal and L'Oreal Colour Riche #410 Volcanic contained the highest levels of lead at 7 or more parts per million.
