Peppermint Does More Than Just Settle an Upset Tummy

Peppermint has long been known to be a natural cure for an upset stomach. Peppermint has been around for a long time and is now getting attention from the health industry.

In 2007, a study in Italy showed that peppermint relieves the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Patients with IBS who took peppermint oil in capsule for for just one month showed a reduction of 75 percent in symptoms such as pain, bloating and gas. Similar results were found in Australia where researchers found that peppermint relieves pain in the stomach and colon area.

But what many people don't know is that are the other cures that have been found from using peppermint. Here are just a few.

Headaches

Peppermint oil is also effective in relieving tension headaches. In fact, it has been found to be just as effective as taking acetaminophen. Relief can be experienced within 15 minutes by rubbing peppermint oil on the forehead and temples.

Mental alertness

Schools are beginning to recognize the effects that peppermint has on increasing mental alertness in children. Results of tests performed by the Wheeling Jesuit University showed children were more alert and performed better after smelling peppermint. One school in Maryland even ordered peppermint candy for their students who were taking state tests.

Congestion
If you take a menthol product for congestion and runny nose, you might be surprised to know it contains peppermint. It's not a cure-all, but many people have reported some relief by inhaling peppermint.

Peppermint capsules can be purchased without a prescription at any pharmacy or retail outlet store.
