4 Cold Remedies That Work!

Just about everyone gets colds throughout the year, especially during the winter months. And there are as many recommendations as there are colds as to how to get rid of them. Which ones actually work? Here are a few you can count on that have been recommended by the Mayo Clinic.

#1 - Drink Plenty of Fluids

When your mother or your doctor tells you to drink plenty of fluids, they are actually giving you good advice. Fluids break up congestion and prevent dehydration. Good fluids include water, juice and soup broths. DON'T drink alcohol, soda or coffee; it will increase dehydration.

#2 - Gargle with salt water

This is an old remedy that actually works. Dissolve 1/2 tsp. of salt in an 8-oz. glass of warm water and gargle. It will give you temporary relief from a sore throat.

#3 - Chicken soup

Yes, chicken soup is actually good for colds and flu. It keeps inflammation down and also speeds up the flow of mucus.

#4 - Humidifier

Mothers have been putting humidifiers in the rooms of their children for years as a relief for cold symptoms. Moisture is important to prevent the sinus passes from getting dried out. Whether you use a humidifier of sit in a steamy bath, the moisture will relieve the symptoms of scratchy throat and runny nose.
