Are E-Cigarettes Safe?

It seems technology has thought of everything. Now, instead of regular cigarettes--which everyone knows are unsafe and unhealthy--E-cigarettes are gaining in popularity. E-cigarettes are electronic cigarettes which are designed to satisfy the smoking urge without the use of tobacco.

E-cigarettes function by using an electric inhaler that releases a vapor. They operate on batteries and look like real cigarettes but do not emit the tobacco smoke that not only is hazardous to your health but also the health of those in close proximity. They are meant to be a safer alternative to tobacco smoking. But are they?

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, maybe not. When the FDA analyzed samples of E-cigarettes, they found not only traces of nicotine but also toxic chemicals and cancer-causing substances (carcinogens). The FDA responded by issuing a warning about potential health risks associated with electronic cigarettes.

Some E-cigarette manufacturers have already been cited for using unapproved drugs or making unsubstantiated claims regarding their benefit. But for now, manufacturers are allowed to sell E-cigarettes while the FDA continues its investigation.
