4 Must-Have Tests for Men 50 and Older

When men reach the age of 50, there are four very important health exams they should have in order to remain healthy and active now and in later years, too.

1. Prostrate Exam

Prostrate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men. Doctors recommend getting a prostrate exam at age 50 which will serve as a baseline to detect any changes in future exams. This exam should be done every year.

2. Colonoscopy

Colon cancer represents the third most common type of cancer in men. The good news is that the test usually can be done every ten years. However, if your family has a history of colon cancer, the test should be done more often. Check with your doctor.

3. Skin Cancer Check

This is a test that can easily be done by the doctor as part of an annual physical. Checking the skin from head to toe for any changes in moles, freckles, new spots on the skin or any abnormality can help the doctor determine if any growth has occurred. Early prevention is the best way to treat skin cancer.

4. Hearing Test

Hearing loss is common as we grow older. It affects approximately one third of all adults over age 65, and half of all adults over 75. Men are more susceptible to hearing loss than women. Hearing problems can include not only hearing loss but also ringing or other noises in the ears, which is called tinnitus.
