Over the years, information about the effects of coffee on health have gone from good to bad and back again. The latest information on coffee shows that it can actually be good for you. Here are some of the reasons why you may want to drink coffee.

#1 - Coffee is a natural stimulant - coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine occurs naturally in several plants but most commonly in the coffee bean. A natural substance is preferred over the many chemical stimulants on the market today. In addition, coffee is the biggest source of caffeine.

#2 - Coffee is also a good source of antioxidants - in fact, according to research by the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in U.S. diets. The benefits of antioxidans include protection against heart disease and cancer. Coffee contains more antioxidants than tea, milk, chocolate, fruit, vegetables and other foods.

#3 - Coffee is good for the brain - it releases neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine which make the brain function quicker. It may not make you smarter but it will increase mental alertness. It will also improve memory, mood and reaction time.

#4 - Coffee raises the rate of metabolism - this is the rate at which your body burns fat. An increase in the metabolism will result in burning more fat and increasing the effectiveness of exercise.

#5 - Coffee's other health benefits - studies have shown that drinking coffee can lower the risk of liver disease, type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

So, sit back, relax and have another cup of joe, java, mud, brew.....
